Wi-Fi Access Point Calculator

Estimate how many Wi-Fi access points a building needs for coverage and for the number of devices, and the PoE power they draw.

Count phones and laptops: most people carry two.

Wi-Fi 6 and 7 access points usually need PoE+ (25.5 W) or more.

Results

Access points for coverage: 6

Access points for the number of devices: 3

Access points to plan for: 6 (set by coverage)

Devices per access point: 20

PoE power for the access points: 153 W

Rules of thumb from vendor planning guides. Walls, ceilings, racking and neighbouring networks change the answer, so confirm it with a site survey before buying. Check the switch with the PoE Power Budget Calculator.

How it works

Coverage is the floor area divided by the area one access point covers in that kind of building. Capacity is the devices online at once divided by the busy devices one access point serves well for that use. Plan for whichever is larger. PoE power is the access points x the power each needs.
