Virtual Server Sizing Calculator

Work out the processor cores, memory and storage a virtualisation host needs for its virtual machines.

4 is typical for office servers; use 1 or 2 for busy databases or recording servers.

Results

Virtual CPUs in total: 16

Physical processor cores: 5

Memory needed: 86 GB

Memory to fit: 96 GB

Storage: 0.96 TB

Cores and memory include the room to grow. Leave out hyper-threads when counting physical cores. For high availability, size each host to carry the load of the others if one fails.

How it works

Cores are the virtual CPUs x the room to grow, divided by how many virtual CPUs share a physical core. Memory is the machines x their memory plus the host itself, x the room to grow, rounded up to a common fitted size. Storage is the machines x their storage x the room to grow.
