Off-Grid Solar & Battery Calculator

Size the solar panel, battery and charge controller for a camera or 4G router that runs off-grid.

The camera plus any 4G router, from the datasheets.

How long the battery must keep the camera running through cloudy weather.

The Bureau of Meteorology's daily solar exposure for the site, in MJ/m², divided by 3.6.

Dust, heat, wiring and charging losses.

Results

Energy per day: 192 Wh

Battery capacity: 720 Wh (60 Ah at 12 V)

Solar panel: at least 102 W

Charge controller: at least 10.7 A

A starting point for a remote camera site, not a full stand-alone power system design. Size for the worst month: winter sun in southern Australia is a fraction of summer.

How it works

Daily energy is the load in watts x the hours it runs. The battery must cover that for the days with no sun, divided by the share of its capacity you can use (80% for lithium, 50% for AGM), and amp-hours are watt-hours divided by the system voltage. The panel must replace a day's energy in the worst month's peak sun hours after losses. The charge controller is the panel's current at the system voltage plus 25%.
