Rack Size, Power & Heat Calculator

Pick the rack height for your equipment and work out its power, current, heat load and UPS size.

Add up the U of every server, switch, patch panel, recorder and UPS. 1U is 44.45 mm.

Results

Rack space with spare: 18U

Rack to buy: 18U

Power: 1.50 kW (6.5 A)

Heat to remove: 5,118 BTU/h

UPS for the rack: at least 2,083 VA

Every watt the equipment uses becomes heat: 1 W is 3.412 BTU/h. The UPS figure assumes a 0.9 power factor with 25% headroom. A single 10 A outlet supplies about 2,300 W.

How it works

Rack space is the equipment height plus the spare space, rounded up to the next rack sold. Power in kW is the watts divided by 1,000, and current is the watts divided by the supply voltage. Heat is 3.412 BTU/h for every watt. The UPS is the watts divided by a 0.9 power factor, with 25% headroom.
