PC & Server Power Supply Calculator

Add up the processors, graphics cards, drives and fans in a PC or server to size its power supply and UPS.

From the processor's datasheet. Use the boost or PL2 figure if it lists one.

Keeps the supply in its efficient range and allows for upgrades.

Results

Estimated full load: 212 W

Supply needed with headroom: 276 W

Power supply to buy: 450 W

Drawn from the wall at full load: 236 W

UPS to protect it: at least 327 VA

Drives use about 8 W (hard drive) and 4 W (SSD), memory modules about 4 W and fans about 3 W. Processors can draw more than their TDP while boosting; graphics card makers state a recommended supply size, which wins if it is larger.

How it works

Full load is the processor power x the number of processors, plus the graphics cards, about 8 W a hard drive, 4 W an SSD, 4 W a memory module, 3 W a fan and the motherboard. The supply should be the load plus your headroom, rounded up to the next common size; the wall draws the load divided by about 0.9 efficiency, and the UPS is that divided by a 0.9 power factor with 25% headroom.
