PA Ceiling Speaker Coverage Calculator

Work out how many ceiling speakers a room needs for even sound, their spacing, and the 100 V amplifier to drive them.

1.2 m for seated people, 1.6 m standing.

From the speaker datasheet; usually 90 to 120 degrees for ceiling speakers.

Background music in a quiet room: 1 to 3 W. Paging in a noisy space: 6 W or more.

Results

Coverage circle at listening height: 3.6 m across

Speaker spacing (square grid): 2.5 m

Speakers needed: 62

Load on the amplifier: 186.0 W

Amplifier: 240 W (223 W with headroom)

Edge-to-edge coverage, with the speakers in a square grid so there are no gaps at ear height. For clearer speech in noisy or echoing spaces, put them closer together. Check the amplifier load with the 100 V Line Speaker Load Calculator.

How it works

Each speaker covers a circle at listening height of 2 x (ceiling height - listening height) x tan(half the coverage angle). In a square grid the spacing is that diameter divided by the square root of 2, so there are no gaps. Speakers are the floor area divided by the spacing squared, and the amplifier is the speakers x tap setting plus headroom, rounded up to a common size.
