Downtime Cost Calculator

Work out what an hour of IT, internet or system downtime costs your business, and what it adds up to in a year.

Wage plus super, leave and overheads.

Some customers wait and come back; some go elsewhere.

Results

Lost staff time an hour: $619

Lost revenue an hour: $240

Cost an hour: $859 ($14 a minute)

Cost per incident: $3,935

Cost a year: $11,805

Leaves out harder-to-count costs: missed deadlines, customers who do not come back, and data that cannot be recovered. Compare the yearly figure with the cost of a spare, a backup internet service, a UPS or monitoring.

How it works

Lost staff time is the staff affected x the hourly cost x the share of work lost. Lost revenue is the revenue an hour x the share lost while down. An incident is the hourly cost x the hours down, plus repair and catch-up. The year is the incident cost x the incidents a year.
