CCTV Recording Server Calculator

Size a CCTV recording server: network connection, disk writes, storage, drives and memory for your cameras.

Use the CCTV Bitrate Calculator if you are not sure.

Results

Recording traffic into the server: 128 Mbps

Network connection: 1 GbE

Disk writes: 16.0 MB/s

Storage needed: 45.6 TB

Drives: 7 x drive, RAID 5 (one drive of parity)

Memory to start from: 16 GB

Storage adds 10% for the file system and indexes. Memory is a starting point (8 GB plus 1 GB for every 16 cameras); check the recording software maker's own sizing tool for the processor, and allow extra network capacity for people viewing live and playback.

How it works

Traffic in is the cameras x the bitrate. Disk writes are that divided by 8, in MB/s. Storage is the traffic x the seconds recorded each day x the days kept, divided by 8, plus 10% for the file system. Drives are the storage divided by the drive size, rounded up, plus one for RAID 5 or two for RAID 6, or doubled for RAID 10. Memory starts at 8 GB plus 1 GB for every 16 cameras.
