CCTV
CCTV systems are one of the most common forms of surveillance available today -- an affordable and reliable way to safeguard your business and people.
Estimate the bitrate a camera will stream from its resolution, frame rate, compression and how busy the scene is.
15 fps is common for surveillance; 25 or 30 fps gives smoother motion.
Estimated bitrate: 2.3 Mbps
Continuous recording per camera per day: 25 GB
A planning estimate: use the camera maker's bitrate when you have it. Smart codecs such as H.265+ can cut a mostly still scene much further. Take the bitrate to the CCTV Storage or Bandwidth calculator.
This uses the Kush gauge, a widely used rule of thumb: width x height x frame rate x a motion factor (1 for a quiet scene, 2 for a moderate one, 4 for a busy one) x 0.07 bits per pixel gives the H.264 bitrate. H.265 usually needs 25-50% less for the same picture, so we take 40% off. A day of continuous recording is the bitrate x 86,400 seconds.
