Backup Storage Calculator

Work out the storage your backups need from the data size, daily changes, how long you keep them and the 3-2-1 copies.

1 TB is 1,000 GB.

Usually 1-5% for office files and servers.

Use 1 for photos and video, which do not compress.

The 3-2-1 rule: three copies in all, on two kinds of storage, one away from the site.

Results

One full backup: 1.33 TB

One daily change: 40 GB

Full backups kept: 21

Storage per backup copy: 35.70 TB

Storage for 2 copies: 71.40 TB

Assumes every weekly and monthly backup is a full copy. Storage that shares blocks between backups (most modern backup software and NAS units) needs much less, so this is the safe upper figure.

How it works

Each weekly and monthly backup kept, plus the latest, is counted as a full copy of the data; each daily backup kept holds that day's changes. Both are divided by the compression and deduplication ratio, room to grow is added, and the total is multiplied by the number of backup copies.
